The’re getting the passports out but it will require an extra $500 million or so

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

It’s no surprise to us that Passport Services, the agency of the State Department, has gone far over its budget. But before you jump to criticize them as Senator Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. did (he blamed it on “incompetence and poor planning”), remember that no one knew how this was going to roll out — our country has never done anything like this in its history. And it was Congress that created this law requiring everyone to have a passport in just a couple of years from the time the law was passed.

In fact, Passport Services predicted with relative accuracy the demand for the year, it just didn’t correctly envision that so many of their 18 million estimated applicants would apply at the same time. We know the rules and the landscape of passports very well, and neither we nor anyone else in the know saw this coming.

We deal with Passport Services’ offices in eight cities and we know that the employees of those agencies are overall doing an excellent job of dealing with a difficult situation. So we take our hats off to them.

You can read more about the cost overruns on this Fox News article.

Expedited passports to take longer

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Passport Services announced formally that expedited passport turnaround would take ten days for internal processing rather than three days.

Although criticized by members of Congress, the move by Passport Services is a move we applaud. They are simply acknowledging the reality they face.

A Brief Guide To Barcelona

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Dan Oldfield

Outside the city limits of Barcelona lie intriguing suburbs, a striking coastline and amazing mountains. All lie in wait for the intrepid visitor.

Antonio Gaudi, the late famous architect, commissioned Parc Güell, a peculiar array of vibrant ceramic benches, large ornamental lizards, mosaics and pavilions of knotted stone. It is located behind the city and commands a great view of Barcelona. Initially constructed with a view to being a market, the 84 stone columns of the Sala Hipóstila are well worth a visit. Gaudi resided for his last 20 years in the Casa Museu Gaudí the spired house found on the same site.

A well established home of learning, Gràcia has a very down to earth feel. Vibrant nightlife can be found in its Plaça del Sol which is also a great place to visit by day.

People either love or hate the Temple del Sagrat Cor, a majestic basilica near the centre of Barcelona. Fantastic views and an amusement park are two of the attractions at Tibidabo, a peak among a wooded range that sits behind the city. Tibidabo is serviced by a glass lift that
reaches 115m to the peak.

Constructed over 900 years ago and still attracting pilgrims to its La Moreneta (The Black Virgin), the Monestir de Montserrat is situated among a mountain range 50 km north west of Barcelona.

Accommodation in Barcelona is vast and varied. There is so much to choose from whether you are into hostels or modern, luxurious five star hotels. There are backpacker lodgings and various hotels spread across the city. It is not difficult to find a lodging that provides easy access to the cities main attractions.

Dining in Barcelona is a wonderful experience. The city has all there is to offer in means of great food and wine. There are plenty of Cervecerias which are bars that serve beer and various other drinks. There are dozens of restaurants scattered through the city that offer a variety of international cuisine. If traditional sea food dishes are your thing then head to one of the many marisquerias.

Things To Remember When You Go On A Cruise

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Chonticha Marijne

As is the case with all vacations, there are some safety risks that you should keep in mind when you go away on your dream cruise. Considering not only your own safety but also the safety of your family members is a must that will ensure that you will get the most out of your vacation.

Many shut their front door behind them and the thought of anything going wrong never crosses their mind, but the truth is that people can get hurt when things go wrong. It’s not fun to think about it, but it is a fact of life that we all need to deal with at some point. Safety is not the only issue that you should be thinking of, but also what your cruise activities will consist of, and what your expectations are when your ship leaves the harbor. Knowing what’s in store for you and your family can be really beneficial.

Going on a cruise is a fabulous vacation and the ideal opportunity for you and your family to get away from it all. Your cruise can last from a couple of days to a couple of weeks (or even longer) and it is your chance to forget about the rest of the world. Imagine going back home when your cruise is behind you and sharing your fabulous experiences with your friends and neighbors… they’ll be green with envy and you’ll be reliving those thrilling moments all over again.

It’s important to make a checklist of the things you want and need to take with you on your cruise, including your travel papers such as tickets, passports (don’t forget to get your visas on time if required), driver’s license etc. It’s highly recommended that you make a copy of your passport and that of the family members traveling with you and keep the copies separate from your passport, just as a precaution in case the original gets lost or stolen.

Other must have items are your digital camera to record all your special cruise moments (don’t forget the charger and extra memory cards). Don’t forget to bring your medications and have your doctor write out replacement prescriptions and take them with you. If you wear contacts or prescription glasses, make sure that you pack a spare pair in your luggage. In addition to your day and evening wear items, include your swimming and snorkeling gear. Other items that you may want to include are binoculars, a travel alarm clock, ear plugs (if you’re a light sleeper) and your cell phone charger.

Irreplaceable items that have special meaning to you, such as jewelry, should be left safely tucked away — preferably in a safe — at home. If you lose such an item to chance or thieves during your cruise, you would never forgive yourself and it could spoil your vacation, so why take the risk? And before you lock your front door, make sure that a good friend or your neighbor knows where you can be reached in case of emergency. Going on a cruise is not something you do all the time, so by making every moment count and keeping it fun you’ll ensure that you are getting your money’s worth!

Tips for Traveling With Young Kids

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Clinton Maxwell

Are you taking a vacation with a baby or toddler and worried that it will be a hassle? Well, you’re right to worry but with a few tips and suggestions, your family vacation will be enjoyable for you and your young ones.

If you’re planning on traveling by yourself with your child then consider asking for help from a friend or family member. The added cost of their company will more than pay for itself with the assistance that they’ll provide.

If you’ll be traveling by car then try not to drive extended distances without stops. Plan rest stops about every two hours and consider staying the night at a midway point to give you and
your baby a rest from the road.

Travel by plane can also take its toll on adults and kids. Get your seats booked in advance and if possible, get a bulkhead seat. These seats have a wall in front of them and offer a bit of room for your child to move around. Airlines generally will let you pre-board with infants so you can get settled in your seats before the other passengers board. If air travel is more than a few hours then consider stopping off at a midway point along the way. Not only will it give you and your
family a rest but you can take a day or two to discover an interesting destination.

If you’re traveling with a young baby then make sure you bring plenty of the diaper changing essentials and bottles of formula or baby food. Regardless of age, pack things to keep children busy. If they’re young, bring rattles and teething rings. If they’re older then bring a new toy
since old ones won’t keep them occupied for too long. Consider purchasing a portable DVD player so they can be kept busy watching their favorite program or cartoon. There are also children’s books that are accompanied by CD’s so your child can listen and read at the same time; not only will it keep them busy but it will also be educational. Coloring books sound like a good idea but coloring can be too much of a temptation to draw on tray tables and seats.

Bring snacks since children often get hungry and thirsty and they tend to be finicky eaters. Don’t pack messy snacks and try to find food with low sugar. Pack lots of baby wipes; they come in handy for cleaning up messy faces and small spills.

Holidays with babies and toddlers don’t have to be nightmares. With some preparation, planning some rests along the way and keeping them busy, you and your family can have an enjoyable vacation.
