United States Passport Renewal Requirements and Instructions

Need a Passport Renewal? Your Passport Can be Renewed if You Meet These Criteria.

  • I have my Passport in my possession.
  • I was 16 years of age or older when the Passport was issued (children's passports can not be renewed).
  • The Passport was issued within the last 15 years.
  • The Passport is in my current name (If you have changed your name due to marriage, divorce or court order and can submit original or certified documents showing the court-ordered name change, then you can apply in your new name).

If you do not meet these criteria, you must apply for a new Passport instead of renewing your existing Passport. If your Passport was issued for only one year or less, you must extend your Passport validity.

Note: Passport applicants between the ages of 16 and 17 must appear with one parent to co-sign the application. For applicants under 16, click here.

Note: If you are departing the U.S. within 4 business days, you must call us to ensure we have the capacity to process your passport application in time for your departure.

There are three steps to renewing a US Passport:

Gather Items to Send to A Briggs

A

Your Passport

Send A Briggs your expired Passport. We will return your old Passport along with your new Passport. The new Passport will have a different Passport number.

Passport Photos

You will be required to submit two (2) identical passport photographs. Photographs must be taken by a passport photographer. Homemade photos are not acceptable and most often cause a delay in passport issuance.

DS-82 Application

Click on the link at the bottom of this section (Section C) to create your DS-82 Application for US Passport by Mail.
You will be prompted to complete the form. You must answer every question as completely as possible.

After you answer all questions, click on the “Create Form” button at the bottom of the page. If there are no errors on the form, your completed DS-82 Application for US Passport by Mail will appear.

Print 2 copies of all pages of the DS-82 Application for US Passport by Mail form (on white 8.5" x 11" paper only), including the instructions, so that each page is printed on one side of the paper. Do not print on both sides of any sheet of paper.

US Passport applicants may electronically submit their personal information and then print the completed form.  This system generates a 2D bar code (required for all applications submitted by hand carry, the submission method used by A Briggs) on the printed form.  This 2D barcode enables the information to be reproduced electronically.  All information is captured on a secure U.S. Department of State server and is deleted once the form is printed.  Please note the US Passport Office will not accept hand carry applications without the 2D barcode.

You must sign the completed DS-82 Application for US Passport by Mail on the first page in either blue or black ink.

(The State Department web site does not support the Safari, Opera or Chrome web browsers for passport form completion; Internet Explorer and Firefox should work fine, however.)

Government Fees

A check or money order made payable to "U.S. Department of State" for $170.00.

NOTE: If paying by check:

Please include your date of birth on the memo line of the check. Starter checks for new bank accounts are NOT acceptable.

Although it is recommended that your check have your name pre-printed on it, if submitting a business check or someone else's check, make sure to include your name, address and date of birth on the check. Money orders must contain your information on them.

Letter of Authorization

Submit 2 sets of letters of authorization. A letter of Authorization gives A Briggs the authority to submit your application and pick-up your passport when issued. We are only allowed to submit a certain number of passports each day, and the additional names on the additional authorization letters are for our sister companies under whose name we may submit your application in order to provide the fastest available service.

NOTE: Each copy MUST contain your original signature preferably in Blue Ink. Fax or photo copies of your signature are NOT acceptable - all letters must have original signatures.

Proof of Departure

Submit 2 copies of your computer-generated itinerary or your ticket from an airline, travel agency, or online booking agency showing your departure from the U.S. FAX or photocopies are acceptable.

If you are unable to provide an itinerary please provide a letter from your company on letterhead. This letter should explain details of the trip and needs to be signed by someone other than the applicant.

If you are unable to provide a trip itinerary or company letter, we can still assist you without one however it will take a minimum of 11 business days.

If You Have Changed Your Name

If you have legally changed your name and you wish to have your new Passport issued in your new name, you must submit an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the name change, plus one photocopy of the document. Your new Passport will be issued in your new name.

Additional

If you have a temporary Passport, issued at a US Embassy overseas or other situation causing a short term Passport issuance, you must include a certified birth certificate, past US Passport, or Naturalization Certificate, plus one photocopy of the document.

Payment, Online Order Form and Shipping Information

 

Online Order Form and Payment

The Online Order Form must be completed. Please print two copies of the confirmation page. Include one copy in the A Briggs envelope and keep one copy for your records.

The Online Order Form will prompt you for payment method. You may pay the A Briggs fees online with a credit card or enclose a personal or business check or money order.

Processing times are business days and do not include shipping time. Keep this in mind when placing your order. Orders are filled based on departure date. For example, a traveler leaving in 10 days that selects 1 to 4 day service may experience fulfillment times of up to 6 days including shipping.

Carrier Specific Shipping Notes

On the FedEx air bill, check the box in 4a "FedEx Priority Overnight".
Do NOT ship "First Overnight" unless instructed otherwise by an A Briggs agent; this will delay the delivery of your package.

The UPS Shipping Document must indicate "UPS Next Day Air". Any other type of UPS service is NOT acceptable.

For shipments via USPS Express Mail or other shipping providers, please follow the instructions carefully when completing the air bill.

Note: Additional shipping costs must be charged to a credit card for each package shipped to an international destination and the following locations: Alaska, Hawaii, and all U.S. Territories.

Saturday Delivery is an additional $14 when available to US destinations.

Failure to follow these instructions may cause a delay in processing, and could also result in additional charges on your order for shipping, such as: before 8:00am delivery, Saturday Delivery, etc. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us toll free at 1-800-806-0581.
